How to read candlestick charts

Every candle represents a time period: 1 minute, 1 hour, 1 day, and so on. It shows four prices: Open, High, Low, Close (OHLC). The body is the range between open and close, and the wicks (thin lines) extend to the high and low.

Green candle: price closed higher than it opened. Bullish.
Red candle: price closed lower than it opened. Bearish.
The wick above the body = sellers pushed price back down from the high.
The wick below the body = buyers pushed price back up from the low.

Key candlestick patterns

Patterns are most reliable when they appear at key support/resistance levels and confirmed by volume.

Pro tip
No single candle pattern is 100% reliable. Always confirm with at least one indicator (RSI, MACD, or volume) before acting on a pattern. Patterns on higher timeframes (1D, 1W) carry significantly more weight than on 1m or 5m.

Support & Resistance

Support is a price level where buyers historically step in and halt a decline. Resistance is where sellers historically appear and cap a rally. When price breaks through resistance, it often becomes new support. Traders call this a flip.

On OSRS, support/resistance works the same way for item prices. A whip that repeatedly bounces off 2.7M has strong support at that level.

Technical indicators explained

Indicators are mathematical formulas applied to price/volume data. They help you see momentum, trend direction, and potential reversals. TT currently shows EMA, Bollinger Bands, VWAP, RSI, and MACD.

EMA (Exponential Moving Average)

An EMA smooths price by weighting recent candles more heavily. Common periods: EMA 9 (short-term momentum), EMA 21 (medium trend), EMA 50 (swing trend), EMA 200 (macro trend).

Bullish signals
Price above EMA 200, short EMAs crossing above long EMAs (golden cross), or price bouncing off EMA as support.
Bearish signals
Price below EMA 200, short EMAs crossing below long EMAs (death cross), or price rejected at EMA as resistance.

Bollinger Bands

Three lines: a 20-period SMA in the middle, with upper and lower bands 2 standard deviations away. When bands are narrow (squeeze), a big move is coming. When price touches the upper band, the asset is overbought short-term. Lower band = oversold.

Common mistake
Price touching the upper band alone is NOT a sell signal. In strong uptrends, price can "walk the band" for many candles. Wait for a rejection candle or RSI confirmation before acting.

RSI (Relative Strength Index)

RSI oscillates 0–100 and measures momentum. Above 70 = overbought (possible pullback). Below 30 = oversold (possible bounce). The 50 line is the momentum midpoint. Above 50 is generally bullish territory.

RSI Divergence (powerful)
If price makes a new high but RSI makes a lower high, that's bearish divergence: momentum is fading. Price at a new low while RSI makes a higher low points to bullish divergence.
OSRS application
RSI below 30 on a popular item often precedes a bounce as flippers start buying the dip. Above 70 may signal a top before a correction back to fair value.

MACD (Moving Average Convergence Divergence)

MACD shows the difference between EMA 12 and EMA 26 (the MACD line). A 9-period EMA of that difference is the signal line. The histogram shows the gap between them. When MACD crosses above signal = bullish. Below = bearish.

VWAP (Volume Weighted Average Price)

VWAP is the average price weighted by volume. It resets each day and institutions use it as a benchmark. Price above VWAP means buyers are in control; below means sellers. It's most useful on intraday charts (1m, 5m, 30m).

Reading buy/sell signals

The signal engine scores each chart from 1–10 based on five factors. The badge in each panel header shows the current verdict. Here's how it works:

FactorBullish conditionBearish conditionWeight
RSI level30–50 (recovering from oversold)70+ (overbought)2 pts
EMA stackEMA9 > EMA21 > EMA50EMA9 < EMA21 < EMA503 pts
MACD crossoverMACD above signal lineMACD below signal line2 pts
Bollinger positionPrice near lower band (bouncing)Price near upper band (rejecting)1 pt
Price vs EMA200Price above EMA200Price below EMA2002 pts
Strong Buy
Score 8–10. Most signals aligned bullish. High conviction but watch for overbought RSI.
Buy
Score 6–7. More bullish than bearish signals. Good risk/reward setup.
Neutral
Score 4–5. Mixed signals. Wait for a clearer setup before entering.
Sell
Score 2–3. More bearish signals active. Risk is elevated for longs.
Strong Sell
Score 0–1. Strong bearish alignment. Avoid longs; consider shorts if applicable.
Important disclaimer
These signals are for educational and informational purposes only. They are based on simulated price data and technical analysis algorithms which are never 100% accurate. Do not make real financial decisions based solely on these signals. Always do your own research.

When signals fail

Technical signals fail most often during: major news events (earnings, Fed decisions, regulatory news), low volume periods (signals are weaker with thin order books), and extreme market conditions (crashes, manias). Always check macro context.

On OSRS, signals can fail during updates that change item utility, bot bans that affect supply, or streamer/content creator influence that spikes demand unpredictably.

OSRS Grand Exchange market analysis

The OSRS GE is a real economy with supply, demand, and speculation. It behaves a lot like traditional financial markets, and the same charting principles apply.

OSRS Exchange

The premier tool for OSRS market data

osrs.exchange is the go-to platform for deep OSRS Grand Exchange charting. It covers the full item catalogue with accurate historical price data, volume, buy/sell margins, and time series charts for every tradeable item in the game. If you are serious about flipping or market analysis, start there.

Why TA works on OSRS items

Supply & demand
Items have finite supply (drops, crafting) and variable demand (meta changes, new content). Imbalance drives price exactly like stocks.
Speculation & momentum
Flippers and merchers move prices, creating trends. These trends exhibit the same momentum and mean-reversion patterns as crypto or stocks.
Volume matters
High-volume items (sharks, nature runes) have tighter spreads and more reliable signals. Low-volume rares have wide spreads and erratic price action.

OSRS-specific patterns to watch

SituationWhat to watch for
New boss/content dropBIS gear for that content spikes, then corrects as supply catches up (typically 1–3 weeks)
Bot ban wavesResources bots farm (yew logs, certain ores) spike in price due to supply shock
LeaguesItems popular in League meta pump hard. Short-lived though, so sell before League ends
Merch clan manipulationLow-volume items spike fast with no fundamental reason. High RSI + abnormal volume = caution
EMA 200 bounceStaple items (whip, blowpipe) often respect long-term EMA 200 as strong support

Bot ban waves: deep dive

Bot ban waves are one of the most reliable and repeatable market events in OSRS. When Jagex deploys a large ban wave, a significant portion of the bot population is removed at once. Bots run 24/7 across dozens of accounts and account for a huge share of resource supply, so even a partial clearout creates an immediate supply shock that sends prices sharply higher.

How the price cycle plays out

Phase 1: Supply shock (hours)
Bots stop listing on the GE. Existing stock drains quickly. Buy prices start rising as demand exceeds supply. Volume spikes as flippers begin stocking up. This is the fastest-moving phase. Prices can jump 10–30% within a few hours on heavily botted items.
Phase 2: Price discovery (days)
Legitimate players and remaining bots partially fill the gap, but at a higher equilibrium. Items stabilise at their new, elevated price. RSI often pulls back from overbought (70+) into the 50–60 range. This is typically the best entry point for a medium-term hold.
Phase 3: Recovery or reversion
If Jagex continues enforcement, prices hold or climb further. If new bots flood back in, prices correct toward previous levels over 1–3 weeks. Watch trade volume: rising volume at high prices = sustained demand. Falling volume = correction incoming.

Most commonly affected items

Item / CategoryWhy bots farm itTypical price swing
Nature runesHigh-volume runecrafting bot target, used in alchemy and crafting+15–40%
Astral & Cosmic runesLunar/crafting routes, minimal competition from legit players+10–25%
Sharks / AnglerfishFishing bots run 24/7 in volume; staple PvM food+8–20%
Ranarr / Snapdragon weedHerb farming bots target high-value grimy herbs+15–35%
Yew & Magic logsWoodcutting bots flood supply; sudden removal creates sharp gaps+10–30%
Raw ores (iron, coal, mithril)Mining bots, among the most common bot type in OSRS+5–20%
CannonballsSmithing bots produce massive supply; any ban reduces output significantly+10–25%
Dragon bones / AshesSlayer/combat bots drop these as by-product; prayers depend on supply+10–20%

How to profit from bot ban waves

Pre-position on confirmed bans
Jagex sometimes telegraphs enforcement campaigns via social media or patch notes mentioning "account hygiene." When you see this, buy affected resources before the wave hits. Nature runes and herbs are reliable plays. Set limit orders and wait. The spike usually comes within 24–48 hours.
Buy the dip after the spike
After the initial price jump, RSI often overshoots above 70. Wait for it to cool to 50–55 with price near the EMA 21 on a 4H chart. This is the lower-risk entry for holding through Phase 2. Avoid buying at the peak of the initial spike. That's the time to sell, not buy.
Monitor volume for exits
Volume tells you when flippers are done accumulating. When buy volume starts declining while price holds, large flippers are exiting. Sell into the final push. If volume collapses suddenly, the move is over. Exit or hold for the next cycle.
Watch the ban wave forums
The OSRS Reddit, Twitter/X, and the official Jagex newsroom often surface ban wave announcements within hours of deployment. Bookmark the Jagex news page and set Google Alerts for "OSRS bot ban." Speed is everything in Phase 1.

Timing risk
Bot ban waves are unpredictable in timing and scale. Jagex rarely announces them in advance, and the magnitude varies widely. A small wave may barely move prices while a targeted campaign against a major farming network can cause multi-day spikes. Never over-commit capital to a single ban-wave play. Use it as one signal among several, not a guaranteed profit event.
OSRS flip strategy using this app
Set a panel to your target item. Switch to 1H or 4H timeframe. Enable EMA + RSI. If RSI is under 40 and price is near the lower Bollinger Band and EMA 21, it's a potential low-risk buy. Exit when RSI approaches 60–65 or price hits the upper Bollinger Band. This is not financial advice. Think of it as a framework for timing your entries.

Correlation: USD, BTC & OSRS GP

This chart plots BTC, DXY, and GP/USD together so you can watch them over the same window. There is a loose macro relationship between BTC and the dollar. The GP connection is much weaker and mostly game-driven. Here is an honest breakdown of what the data actually shows.

What each line represents

Bitcoin (BTC)
BTC can move inversely to the dollar in macro-driven environments, but it is also heavily influenced by ETF flows, halving cycles, leverage and liquidations, and crypto-specific news. The "BTC is a dollar hedge" narrative is popular but not consistently proven. During high inflation in 2022, BTC dropped significantly — the opposite of what a hedge should do.
US Dollar Index (DXY)
DXY measures USD strength against a basket of major currencies. It does tend to move inversely to BTC over longer timeframes, but short 30-day windows are noisy and this signal alone is not reliable enough to trade on.
OSRS GP/USD
GP price is driven almost entirely by in-game factors: bot supply, ban waves, game updates, events, and RWT market competition. The OSRS economy is small and niche. Any short-term movement that looks correlated to BTC or DXY is most likely coincidence, not a structural relationship.

30-Day Normalized Chart

All three series are normalized to % change from 30 days ago so they can be compared on the same scale. 30-day windows are short and noisy. Short-term correlations come and go and aren't worth trading on. The GP/USD line only shows the last 24 hours of logged data.

How to read this chart
The Y axis shows % change from the start of the window, not real prices. A reading of +5% means that asset is up 5% from where it started. Use this chart to see how the three lines move relative to each other, not to predict GP price from BTC or DXY.

Honest signal breakdown

RelationshipReliabilityNotes
BTC ↕ vs DXY ↕Loose / sometimes validInversely correlated at the macro level, but breaks frequently on crypto-specific news, leverage events, or ETF flow.
BTC as inflation hedgeDebatableA popular narrative but not consistently proven. BTC often acts more like a risk asset than a store of value.
GP/USD vs BTCMostly coincidentalGP is driven by bot supply, ban waves, updates, and RWT demand. Macro economics have little to no structural influence on GP price.
GP/USD vs DXYNo reliable connectionThe OSRS economy is too small and game-specific to respond meaningfully to dollar strength or weakness.

What actually moves GP price

Bot supply & ban waves
The largest driver of GP price. Bots supply the bulk of farmed resources that get converted to GP. When Jagex bans bot networks, supply drops and GP gets more expensive. When bots recover, price falls back. To put the scale in context: Jagex banned 2.25M bot accounts in March 2026 alone and removed 3.67T GP from the economy that month. See the OSRS Market tab for the full enforcement breakdown.
Game updates & events
New content, league events, and QOL updates directly affect how many players are active and what they are spending GP on. New bosses spike demand for BIS gear and consumables. Skilling events increase demand for supplies like potions, food, and planks. Leagues create a separate economy where certain items pump hard for the duration then crash when the event ends. Even small QOL changes can move prices if they affect how a meta activity is played. Updates are often the clearest and most predictable GP price catalyst because they are announced in advance via patch notes.
RWT market competition
The real-money trading market for GP is driven by supply from gold farmers and demand from buyers. Multiple sellers compete on price, which keeps the GP/USD rate in a fairly tight band during stable periods. When a major farming network gets banned or a large seller shuts down, supply tightens and the rate rises. When new farming methods are discovered or a wave of new bots floods the market, supply increases and the rate falls. Jagex enforcement actions (see bot ban data in the OSRS Market tab) are the most consistent shock to this supply side. Competition between RWT sites also creates short-term rate volatility independent of anything happening in the actual game.
Bottom line
BTC and DXY have a loose inverse relationship that is sometimes worth watching. OSRS GP has no reliable structural connection to either. GP price is a game economy problem, not a macro one. Do not use BTC or DXY movement to make GP buying or selling decisions.

Important: Real-money trading (buying or selling GP for real currency) is against Jagex's Terms of Service and can result in a permanent ban. All GP market analysis and pricing data on this site is purely educational.

Risk Management

Trading without a risk plan is gambling. These principles apply equally to OSRS flipping and crypto trading. The maths of ruin is the same regardless of the asset.

Bankroll Management

The 10% Rule
Never put more than 10% of your total bankroll into a single flip or trade. If the market moves against you, a single bad position shouldn't threaten your stack. New flippers often break this rule by going all-in on one item, and one bad trade wipes out weeks of work.
Liquidity Tiers
Split your bankroll by item tier. Keep 50% in fast-moving, high-volume items you can exit quickly (food, runes, potions). Allocate 30% to mid-tier items. Reserve no more than 20% for slow-moving, high-value items like rare drops or skilling supplies that can take hours to sell.
The Reserve Fund
Always keep 15–20% of your bankroll as uninvested GP. This lets you take advantage of sudden price drops, cover unexpected losses, and avoid being stuck holding illiquid items when a better opportunity appears.

Position Sizing & Buy Limits

OSRS buy limits are a hard constraint that most new flippers ignore until they get burned. Each item has a 4-hour GE buy limit that caps how many you can purchase at a time. This directly limits your maximum position size.

Item TierTypical Buy LimitRisk Profile
Runes / food / arrows10,000+Low. Very liquid, margins thin but consistent.
Potions / herbs1,000–2,000Medium. Sensitive to boss updates and supply bans.
Skilling supplies500–1,000Medium. Volatile around game updates.
Gear / weapons1–100High. Illiquid, hard to exit fast in a crash.
Rare cosmetics / PvP gear1–10Very high. One-sided market, can take days to flip.

Cutting Losses

The hardest skill to learn
If an item isn't selling and the buy price is falling, sell at a loss and redeploy the capital. Holding an item hoping it recovers locks up GP that could be working elsewhere. A 5% loss on one position is recoverable. Holding while it drops 40% is not.

Set a personal stop-loss rule before entering a flip. A common approach: if the GE price drops more than 5–8% below your buy price, sell and move on. Sticking to this rule mechanically removes emotion from the decision.

Performance Tracking

You cannot improve what you do not measure. Track every flip with at minimum: item name, buy price, sell price, quantity, time held, and profit/loss in GP. After 50 flips, patterns emerge. Certain item categories will consistently outperform others for your style and bankroll size.

Track GP/hr, not just profit
A 500k profit over 6 hours is worse than a 200k profit over 30 minutes. Time is your real constraint. Calculate GP per hour for each item category so you can allocate capital to the highest-return opportunities.
Review losing streaks
Three or more consecutive losing flips usually signals a systematic problem. You're either entering too late after margins have already compressed, chasing items, or misreading the buy limit cycle. Stop, review your log, and diagnose before continuing.
Psychological traps to avoid
Revenge trading: going bigger after a loss to win it back. This compounds losses.
FOMO entries: buying because the price is rising fast. You're usually buying the top.
Over-diversification: spreading across 50 items so thin you can't track any of them effectively.

Flipping 101

Flipping is buying items low on the Grand Exchange and selling them high, profiting from the difference between the buy (offer) price and the sell (ask) price. It requires no combat, no skills, and no RNG. Just capital, patience, and good habits.

The Core Loop

1. Check the Margin
Buy 1 of an item at max GE price to find the real sell price. Then sell 1 at 1gp to find the real buy price. The difference is the margin. After subtracting 1% GE tax on the sell, the remainder is your profit per item.
2. Calculate GP/hr
Estimate how long a full buy-limit cycle takes to flip. A 1m margin on a 2,000 item limit = 2M profit per cycle. But if it takes 4 hours to sell, that's only 500k/hr. Compare GP/hr across your item list before committing capital.
3. Enter & Wait
Place buy offers 1–5gp above the instabuy price you found to ensure fast fills. Set sell offers 1–5gp below the instasell price. Check back after 30–60 minutes. Adjust by 1–2% if items aren't moving.

Good Starter Items (Low Bankroll)

Items with high volume, thin but consistent margins, and fast turnaround are ideal for building your first bankroll. Avoid high-value gear. The margins look good but the liquidity risk is real.

Item TypeWhy it worksWatch out for
Sharks / AnglerfishHuge volume, constant demand from PvM players.Supply spikes from fishing events/ironmen.
Nature RunesUsed in high alch bots. Demand is massive and predictable.Margin compresses fast when alch meta shifts.
Prayer PotionsConsistent demand from Slayer/bossing. Multi-dose market.Herb supply volatility can swing buy price fast.
CannonballsEnormous buy limit, very liquid, steady demand.Smithing supply events can tank price temporarily.
Stamina PotionsUseful across nearly every PvM activity.Player base size changes affect demand.

Timing Your Entry

GE prices follow real-world time patterns. More players are online in the evenings (UTC+0) and on weekends, which increases competition and compresses margins. Early mornings have thinner books, meaning prices are more volatile but better margin opportunities exist if you're patient.

Best time windows
Off-peak (4–10am UTC): Lower competition, wider margins, slower fills.
Peak (6–11pm UTC weekdays / all-day weekends): Faster fills, but margins compress. Best for high-volume low-margin items.
Post-update: New content releases always spike demand for related supplies. Check patch notes and pre-position if possible.

Common Beginner Mistakes

Avoid these
Margin checking too infrequently: A margin that was 50gp yesterday might be 5gp today. Always re-check before committing a full limit.

Ignoring GE tax: On items over 100gp, you pay 1% tax on the sell (capped at 5M). Factor this into every calculation.

Flipping during active bot ban waves: Supply-side items (herbs, fish, ores) spike in price immediately after ban waves. Selling supply items during a ban wave is good. Buying them is usually bad since prices normalise within days as new bots fill the gap.

Chasing high-margin items you can't afford: A 5M margin on Twisted Bow means nothing if you can only afford 1 and it takes a week to flip. Margin × volume × speed is what matters.

Scaling Up

Once you have a consistent bankroll above 50M, you can start layering multiple items across the buy limit cycle. Set buy offers for 5–8 items simultaneously, staggered by 30 minutes, so you always have items filling and items ready to sell. This is how dedicated merchers sustain 5–10M/hr+ without any RNG.

Universal Tips

Get Your Rogue's Outfit First
  • Full Rogue's outfit doubles all pickpocket loot (coins and items). Complete the Rogue's Den minigame in Burthorpe to unlock pieces.
  • It's the biggest single upgrade for any pickpocket method. Do it before grinding XP.
  • You need 50 Thieving & 50 Agility to attempt the minigame.
Dodgy Necklace
  • Gives a 25% chance to avoid being stunned when you fail a pickpocket.
  • Each necklace has 10 charges and costs around 1k GP. Cheap, and it cuts down banking trips a lot.
  • Essential for mid-level pickpocketing before you have a high success rate.
Ardougne Diary Bonus
  • Ardy Medium Diary → +10% success chance on all pickpocket targets in Ardougne.
  • Ardy Hard Diary → +20% success chance on all pickpocket targets anywhere in the game.
  • The hard diary bonus is extremely powerful. Complete it as soon as you can.

Ardougne Knights AFK Friendly

Ardougne Knights is an NPC pickpocket method unlocked at level 55 Thieving. You click the Ardougne Knight in the market square to pickpocket him, earning coins and XP per successful attempt. Failed attempts stun you briefly, but with the right setup it becomes one of the most AFK-friendly methods in the game.

The biggest quality-of-life upgrade for this method is having a splasher. A splasher is another player (or a second account) casting spells with a high negative magic bonus so every spell misses, keeping the knight locked in combat on one tile. Without a splasher the knight wanders the square and you have to chase him. With one, he stays pinned and you can pickpocket him non-stop without moving.

Thievinghost runs a free splashing service around the clock. To find a world with an active splasher, join the Thievinghost clan chat in-game and check which worlds have a splasher running. Jump in, stand next to the knight, and start pickpocketing.

The Splashing Method Explained

The Ardougne Knight roams the market square and can walk away mid-pickpocket, losing progress. Splashing solves this by having a second account continuously cast spells that always miss (via a high negative magic accuracy gear setup), keeping the knight in combat and locked in one tile.

  • Knight is locked on the splasher's tile and cannot walk away.
  • Your main can now pickpocket freely without the knight moving.
  • The splasher account needs a very negative magic accuracy bonus (full metal armour, no magic gear) so every spell misses. That's intentional.
  • Use Auto-Retaliate OFF on your main so you don't attack the knight on a failed pickpocket.
No Splasher? No Problem

You can still AFK pickpocket without splashing, just expect the knight to wander occasionally. Stick near the east side of the market where he's most commonly found. Plenty of players do fine without a splasher at higher levels.

Tips & Tricks

Top Tips
  • Ardy Hard Diary gives +20% success globally, not just in Ardougne. Knock it out as soon as you can.
  • Use a Dodgy Necklace to cut down banking trips. Each one lasts roughly 10 failed attempts.
  • Wear full Rogue's outfit for double coins per pickpocket. It adds up fast over a long session.
  • Enable Coin pouch auto-open in settings (set to 28 pouches) so you're not manually clicking it.
  • The Ardougne Cloak doesn't need to be worn. Just completing the diary gives the success rate bonus.
  • Keep food or a house tab in your inventory for when you get stunned repeatedly with no dodgy necklace.

Master Farmer Best GP/hr Early

Master Farmers drop valuable farming seeds including Ranarr, Snapdragon, and Torstol. The GP/hr easily outpaces the XP/hr, making this one of the best money-makers available at mid levels.

50+ Thieving for reliable success
Locations
Draynor Village market (classic)
Hosidius (east side, near bank)
Ardougne market (1 farmer roams)

Trapping Method (Draynor)

The classic method is to trap the Draynor Village Master Farmer in the corner of the fence near the market. The farmer AI gets stuck against the fence and cannot walk away, giving you uninterrupted pickpockets.

  • Stand between the fence and the farmer in the southeast corner of Draynor market.
  • The farmer cannot path through you, locking him in a 1×1 area.
  • If he escapes, reposition quickly. He respawns in the same spot.
  • The Hosidius farmer location has better spawn positioning and is closer to a bank, making it preferable for many players.

GP Rate Depends on Seed Prices

GP rates assume current GE values for Ranarr, Snapdragon, and Torstol seeds. Prices fluctuate, so check the OSRS tab for live seed prices. Ranarr seeds are the biggest contributor and typically go for 40k–60k GP each.

Top Tips
  • Full Rogue's outfit doubles seeds, which doubles your GP rate. Get it at Rogue's Den before grinding here.
  • Use a seed box (from Farming Guild or Tithe Farm) to store seeds and cut down on banking.
  • Hosidius is often easier than Draynor. The farmer doesn't need as strict trapping and the bank is right there.
  • Keep a Stamina potion handy. Repositioning after failures burns through run energy faster than you'd expect.
  • Use the coin pouch auto-open setting and click quickly after failures to keep downtime low.

Rogue's Castle Chest Wilderness

The chests at Rogues' Castle in the deep Wilderness (level 52–56) are one of the highest GP/hr thieving methods in the game. The loot is excellent (rune items, coins, gems), but the risk is real. This is a PvP-active zone.

Wilderness Warning

Rogues' Castle is located in deep Wilderness (level 52–56). You CAN be killed by other players here. Only bring what you can afford to lose. Consider bringing nothing except necessary gear and using the Ring of Life as a safety net. Always check the PvP activity in the area before entering.

Requirements

Hard Requirements
84 Thieving

Getting There
Burning amulet teleport to Chaos Temple
Walk north from Edgeville (long)
Wilderness Obelisk (level 44 wildy)

How It Works

Rogues' Castle has three chests inside the walls. You picklock them (84 Thieving required) and loot them on a short respawn timer. A Guard may spawn after looting, so click the chest again quickly to avoid getting caught.

  • You need a lockpick to open the chests (they can fail without one).
  • After looting, watch out. A Guard spawns from the chest. Attack it or run to avoid getting caught.
  • Rotate between the three chests while others respawn.
  • Keep an eye on your minimap for orange dots. That's your PKer warning.

95+~130k~600k+Optimal rotation speed
GP Rates Are Variable

The chest loot table includes rune items, coins, gems, and various supplies. Actual GP/hr depends heavily on RNG and current GE prices. Some sessions will be significantly above or below average. The method is best when the area is quiet (low PvP activity).

Coins1k–5kVery Common
Rune items (various)~5k–60kCommon

Gems (Ruby/Diamond)~3k–10kOccasional

Survival Tips
  • Watch your minimap constantly. Don't get so focused on the chests that you miss a PKer walking up.
  • Keep a teleport tab in your inventory at all times. Burning amulet (3) is ideal.
  • Protect Item prayer means you keep your best item if you die.
  • Eat early. Don't wait until you're in trouble.
  • Try visiting during off-peak hours when PKer activity is lower.

Blackjacking Click Intensive

Blackjacking in Pollnivneach is one of the fastest thieving methods from level 45 all the way to 99. You knock out NPCs with a blackjack and pickpocket them twice before they wake up. It pays well, but it does require consistent attention and clicking.

Requirements

Hard Requirements
45 Thieving (Bearded bandits)
55 Thieving (Pollnivneach bandits)
65 Thieving (Menaphite thugs)
Feud quest (unlocks blackjacking)
A Blackjack (obtainable in Pollnivneach)
Recommended
Rogue's outfit (doubles pickpocket coins)
Coins for bribing the bar owner
Camulet (quick teleport to Pollnivneach)
Waterskins or Desert Amulet 1+ (desert heat)
Stamina potions (for running)
Blackjack Types
Ordinary blackjack (all bandits)
Aggressive blackjack (better KO)
Defensive blackjack (lower KO rate)

The Technique

The blackjacking cycle repeats every few seconds and goes like this:

  1. Lure the NPC inside a building (they won't be attacked by others inside).
  2. Knock out the NPC with the blackjack. This stuns them briefly.
  3. Quickly pickpocket twice before they wake up (you can usually get 2 pickpockets per KO).
  4. Repeat the KO before they fully recover.
  5. If you fail a KO, the NPC attacks. Eat up and try again.
Failed KOs

About 1-in-8 KO attempts will fail and the NPC will attack you. Keep food in your inventory (Monkfish or better). You cannot die from this if you keep an eye on your HP since the NPCs don't hit that hard.

Target Progression

LevelTargetXP / hrGP / hr
45Bearded Pollnivnian Bandit~100k~100k
55Pollnivnian Bandit~150k~130k
65Menaphite Thug~200k~150k
80Menaphite Thug~230k~160k
90+Menaphite Thug~265–275k~170k
Top Tips
  • Always work inside a building. Other NPCs can't interfere in there. The house with the single door works best.
  • Use the right-click menu to knock out and pickpocket fast. Muscle memory matters a lot here.
  • Camulet (from Enakhra's Lament quest) teleports you directly to Pollnivneach for free each day. Otherwise use a Nardah teleport and walk.
  • You don't need to bank much. Coins stack and food lasts since failures aren't that common.
  • Wear the Rogue's outfit to double coins per pickpocket. Over a full 99 grind it makes a real difference.

Pyramid Plunder Semi-AFK

Pyramid Plunder is a thieving minigame in Sophanem. You run through 8 rooms searching urns, sarcophagi, and chests. It's semi-AFK, hits solid XP at high levels, and has a shot at the Pharaoh's Sceptre, one of the most valuable thieving drops in the game.

Requirements

Hard Requirements
61 Thieving (Room 5)
81 Thieving (Room 7, best early on)
91 Thieving (Room 8, max efficiency)
Icthlarin's Little Helper quest
Recommended
High Agility (reduces trap failures)
Antidote++ or Serpentine helm (snake pits)
Food for healing after traps
Pharaoh's Sceptre (teleport to Sophanem!)
Stamina potions
Getting There
Pharaoh's Sceptre teleport (best)
Nardah teleport → walk south
Camulet + walk south from Pollnivneach

How to Play

Each run lasts 5 minutes before the Guardian Mummy boots you out. Clear as many rooms as you can, aiming for Room 8 every run.

  • Enter each room and search the grand gold chest in the south corner first (best XP).
  • Then search sarcophagi and golden urns for additional loot and XP.
  • Watch for snake pits (random event, use antidote) and spear traps (heal through).
  • Pass to the next room via the door on the north or east wall.
  • Aim to reach the highest room you can each run based on your level.
Focus on the Highest Room You Can Enter

The XP from urns and chests scales with the room number. Always prioritise reaching your highest unlocked room, even if it means skipping urns in lower rooms. A room 8 run will always out-earn spending extra time in room 5.

XP Rates by Room

Room ReachedMin LevelXP / hrNotes
Room 561~50kLow efficiency
Room 671~80kDecent starting point
Room 781~120kGood efficiency
Room 891~200–250kBest XP, Pharaoh Sceptre drops

The Pharaoh's Sceptre

The Pharaoh's Sceptre is the big prize from Pyramid Plunder. It teleports directly to Sophanem, which massively speeds up runs. If you already have one, it's worth millions of GP at the GE.

Top Tips
  • Speed is everything. The faster you clear low rooms, the more time you have in the top room. Don't linger in rooms 1–4.
  • The Guardian Mummy can buff your run. Talk to him before entering and pay with noted loot for extra time (if you have sceptre charges).
  • Equip a Serpentine helm to completely ignore snake pit damage.
  • If you get a Pharaoh's Sceptre (c) (uncharged), charge it at the pyramid. Never sell it to a shop uncharged.
  • Use a dedicated Pyramid Plunder world for smoother runs with less NPC competition.

Stall Thieving

Stalls cover the full level range from 2 to 87 Thieving. Most classic stalls (Ardougne, Hosidius) are low-effort early methods. The real story for high-level stall thieving is Port Roberts, added with the Sailing skill, which has 9 non-depleting stalls including the Cannonball Stall at level 87, up to 254k XP/hr with the right rotation.

Port Roberts New with Sailing

Port Roberts is a floating marketplace in the Western Ocean, northeast of Civitas illa Fortis. It requires 50 Sailing to dock and has the best stall thieving in the game. Nine non-depleting stalls cover every level from 2 to 87, with higher-tier stalls giving genuinely competitive XP rates and solid loot.

Cannonball Stall (Lvl 87)

The Cannonball Stall is the highest-level and best XP stall in the game. At 223 XP per steal and up to 255k XP/hr with a good rotation, it's genuinely competitive with top-end methods. The loot ranges from bronze to dragon cannonballs, with dragon cannonballs at roughly 1/256.

Best Rotation at 87+
  • Position yourself between the Cannonball and Ore stalls. Steal 4x from cannonball, then rotate to ore while the guard moves on.
  • This rotation gives around 230–255k XP/hr with moderate attention.
  • Keep a Sailors' amulet on you as a fast exit if you get caught. The 500 coin bribe works too but the amulet is faster.
  • Watch the guard patrol and count your steals. Going over 4 on one stall is when you risk getting caught.

Sorceress's Garden Chill Method

Sorceress's Garden is a thieving minigame south of Al Kharid run by Apprentice Sabrina. You sneak through a magical garden, dodging elemental guardians, to pick Sq'irk fruits. Squeeze those into juice and hand them to Osman in Al Kharid for Thieving XP. It's slow XP compared to most methods, but great for ironmen needing herbs and a genuinely relaxing grind.

Requirements

Hard Requirements
Enters during the Prince Ali Rescue questline area access
Pestle and mortar (for making juice)
Sq'irkjuice (built up per run)
Level Requirements by Garden
Winter Garden: no level requirement
Spring Garden: 40 Thieving
Autumn Garden: 60 Thieving
Summer Garden: 80 Thieving (best)
Getting There
Al Kharid teleport (Camulet or ring)
Walk south from Al Kharid bank
Magic carpet from Shantay Pass area

How It Works

Each garden has a set of elemental guardians that patrol fixed paths. Your job is to time their movement and slip past them to reach the fruit tree in the center. If a guardian spots you, you get teleported back to the entrance.

  1. Enter the garden and watch the elemental's patrol pattern.
  2. Time your movement to slip past each elemental.
  3. Pick Sq'irk fruits at the center tree.
  4. Exit, use fruits with a pestle and mortar to make juice (fruits needed varies by garden — see table below).
  5. Bring the juice to Osman in north Al Kharid for Thieving XP.
Herb Pickup
  • While navigating the garden you can also pick herbs that grow along the paths.
  • The herb types scale with the garden season. Summer garden gives the best herbs including Ranarr, Snapdragon, and Torstol.
  • For ironmen, this makes the summer garden worth visiting even if you don't care about the XP.

XP from Juice (Osman)

WinterNone3505~5–10k
Spring406004~8–15k
Autumn601,3503~15–25k
Summer802,3502~20–35k
Not a Fast XP Method

Sorceress's Garden is not competitive for XP/hr at any level. At 80 you'd be doing Blackjacking or Ardy Knights for 5–10x more XP. The reason to do this is the herbs for ironmen, the chill gameplay, or completing a collection goal. Don't use it as your main training method unless you specifically want the herbs.

Tips

Top Tips
  • Learn each elemental's patrol route before moving. They follow fixed paths, so once you know the timing it becomes easy.
  • The Summer Garden elementals are the most complex to navigate. Watch a video guide first to get the movement pattern down before spending time there.
  • You can pick herbs on the way in and out without going to the fruit tree if you just want herb runs. Useful for ironmen who need specific grimy herbs.
  • Osman is in the north part of Al Kharid near the palace gate. Keep juice in your inventory and hand it in whenever you pass through.
  • The garden can be done on a mobile device comfortably since it's turn-based movement. Good for on-the-go play.

Rocky Skilling Pet

Rocky is the Thieving skilling pet in OSRS. He's an untradeable members-only pet obtained randomly from successful Thieving actions including pickpocketing NPCs, stealing from stalls, looting the Grand Gold Chest in Pyramid Plunder, and picking sq'irk fruit in Sorceress's Garden.

Rocky has three forms. The default form is a raccoon. Feed him redberries to transform into Red, a red panda variant. Feed him poison ivy berries to become Ziggy, a tanuki form. White berries revert him back to the original raccoon.

Drop Rate Formula

Every successful Thieving action rolls for Rocky using the formula:

1 in (B - (Level x 25))

B is the base chance for the specific activity. Level is your actual Thieving level (temporary boosts do not count). Higher level and lower base chance both improve your odds. The rate does not improve past level 99.

Boosts do nothing

Thieving potions, spicy stews, and any other temporary boosts have no effect on the pet rate. Only your base Thieving level is used in the formula.

Rates by Activity

Base chance (B) determines the rate per action. Lower B = better odds. Subtract 2,475 (level 99 x 25) from B to get the rate at max level. All 8 PP chest rolls combined give a cumulative rate of roughly 1/1,604 per full run at level 99.

Note: only the Grand Gold Chest in each PP room gives Rocky. Urns and sarcophagi do not roll for the pet. Wine and seed stalls share the same B=36,490 base as gem stalls -- they are NOT in the silk/tea group.

Best Methods for Rocky Hunting

The best method depends on both the rate per action and how many actions you can do per hour. Pyramid Plunder Room 8 has the single best rate per action, but you only open one chest per room per run. Rapid stall thieving at locations like Prifddinas, Rellekka, or Draynor can generate far more actions per hour at a decent rate, making stalls highly competitive or even faster overall.

PP Room 8 Grand Gold Chest
91 Thieving required
Best rate per action in the game (1/4,418 at 99)
Full 8-room run = ~1/1,604 cumulative rate
Use Pharaoh's Sceptre for faster resets
Graceful + stamina pots for run energy
Stalls (Prif / Rellekka / Draynor)
5+ Thieving (very accessible)
Hundreds of steals per hour -- lots of rolls
1/34,015 per steal at 99 (gem/wine/seed stalls)
Gem stalls in Ardougne and Prifddinas are top picks
Seed stall and wine stall in Draynor also at 1/34,015
More steals per hour beats a better per-action rate
Sorceress's Garden
65 Thieving (Summer Garden)
1/7,864 per sq'irk pick at 99
Same rate as PP Room 7 chest
Slower actions per hour than stalls
Better suited for ironmen wanting herbs
Mid-tier NPCs (Gnome / Paladin)
70-75 Thieving (Paladin 70, Gnome 75)
Gnome: 1/106,243 at 99 (B=108,718)
Paladin: 1/124,581 at 99 (B=127,056)
Decent fallback if you want NPC pickpocketing
Still much worse than stalls for Rocky hunting
Blackjacking, Vyres, and Ardy Knights are all bad for Rocky

Blackjacking Bandits or Menaphite Thugs falls under the standard NPC rate (B=257,211, 1/254,736 at level 99) -- the same rate as almost every other NPC. It is among the best XP methods in the game but one of the worst for pet hunting. Vyre pickpocketing is slightly better at 1/96,700, but still far behind stalls or PP. Ardy Knights are at the standard NPC rate of 1/254,736. If Rocky is the goal, stalls or Pyramid Plunder are the only real choices.

Pyramid Plunder Setup

There are two approaches in PP: sprint to Room 8 only for the fastest runs, or do all 8 rooms for a combined rate of roughly 1/1,604 per run. The full-run approach gives far more expected Rocky rolls per hour for most players since the extra chests in rooms 4-7 add up significantly -- but it's slower per run so only worth it if you can stay efficient through all 8 rooms.

  • Use a Pharaoh's Sceptre to teleport back outside the pyramid quickly. The sceptre drops inside the pyramid and can be recharged with a Jar of Sand (one jar per 4 charges).
  • Wear graceful and bring Stamina potions to keep run energy up through all 8 rooms.
  • Use a Pyramid Plunder world to reduce guard interference.
  • Rooms 4, 5, and 6 each have their own Grand Gold Chest at 1/18,203. Opening all three adds meaningful rolls to each run with minimal detour since they're on the way to rooms 7 and 8.
  • Room 7 at 1/7,864 is well worth the extra few seconds -- it's the same rate as Sorceress's Garden.

Tips

Key things to know
  • Actions per hour matter as much as rate per action. A method with twice the actions per hour at half the per-action rate is identical in expected time. Fast stall spam can outperform PP Room 8-only runs over a full session.
  • Temporary boosts are useless. Only your base level counts. Don't waste potions trying to boost the rate.
  • Urns and sarcophagi in PP do not give Rocky. Only the Grand Gold Chest per room rolls for the pet.
  • Blackjacking is terrible for Rocky. Bandits and Menaphite Thugs use B=257,211 -- the same as almost every other NPC. Great XP, awful pet rate.
  • TzHaar-Hur requires 90 Thieving but has a worse rate than Elves at 85. TzHaar-Hur is 1/174,268 vs Elf at 1/96,700 -- not worth the extra levels for Rocky specifically.
  • You cannot get Rocky twice for a duplicate if you already have one following you. If your inventory is full and you have a follower, the pet goes directly to Probita in East Ardougne.

When You Get Rocky

A message appears in your chatbox: "You have a funny feeling like you're being followed." Rocky will appear in your inventory as an item. Click him to make him follow you.

  • If your inventory is full when Rocky drops and you already have a pet following you, he is sent directly to Probita in East Ardougne.
  • Take Rocky to Probita immediately to insure him for 1,000,000 GP. If you die with an uninsured pet out, it is permanently lost.
  • Once insured, Rocky can be stored in your POH Menagerie and reclaimed for 1M GP if lost on death.
